GNUM, Modeling and Numerical Methods in Engineering group

The research activities of the GNUM are mainly focused on deformable mechanical solids and structural mechanics, with a special focus on the characterization and simulation of the behavior of complex materials and structures, as well as of engineering physical phenomena. The numerical techniques necessary for the appropriate resolution of the resulting models (finite elements, mesh-free methods, etc.) are also studied. The behavior of different materials and components until failure is investigated, including damage, fatigue and strength. The main objective is the prediction of the life of structural components from deterministic and probabilistic points of view and the development of models for the simulation of cumulative damage problems. Research is also mainly focused on tissue modeling and biological processes including hard and soft tissue modeling, evaluation of prostheses and implants and modeling of processes such as bone remodeling or repair. Applications are mainly focused on orthopedic and cardiovascular surgery where highly complex and accurate models have been developed.
